Cookies policy

Why there is no banner

UK law requires a website to ask permission before it stores information on your device or reads information already there. Banners exist because most sites do exactly that, usually for analytics or advertising.

This site does neither. Opening it downloads the page, its styles, its photographs and its typefaces from this website and from nowhere else. Nothing is written to your browser, so there is nothing to ask you about.

We had a choice here, and we chose not to measure our visitors. We would rather be able to tell a chief executive, truthfully, that reading our website puts nothing on their device and tells no advertiser they were here.

The one exception: playing a film

The films on this site are hosted by Vimeo. The Vimeo player is not loaded when the page opens. It loads only at the moment you click a film to play it.

Once it loads, Vimeo may set its own cookies and store data in your browser, under its own policy rather than ours. We reduce this as far as the player allows by loading it with Do Not Track switched on. Vimeo says that stops the player recording the session for analytics or advertising. What happens on Vimeo's own servers is governed by Vimeo's policy rather than ours, and we cannot see it.

Pressing play is how you give permission for this. Until you press it, nothing of Vimeo's runs and nothing of Vimeo's is stored.

If you would rather that never happened, do not press play. Everything else on the site works normally, and no part of the argument we make depends on watching a film.

Vimeo explains what it stores in its own cookie policy.

What about the enquiry form?

Sending an enquiry does not set a cookie either. The form posts what you typed to our hosting provider, which passes it to us by email. What happens to those details afterwards is set out in our privacy policy.

Server logs

Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which record the IP address of the device requesting a page. That is not a cookie and it is not stored on your device. It exists so the site can be delivered and defended from attack.

How to check this yourself

If you would like to verify any of the above rather than take our word for it, open this site in a fresh tab, open your browser's developer tools and go to the storage or application tab. As long as you have not pressed play on a film in that tab, you will find the cookie, local storage and session storage lists empty.

Changes to this policy

If we ever add anything that stores data on your device, we will update this page, change the date at the top, and ask for your consent before it runs.
